You’ve probably heard that teeth weaken as you age, but did you know they aren’t meant to? In fact, your teeth are incredibly strong and may not weaken as we age—as long as they’re cared for properly.
For instance, following a healthy diet is one of the most important things you can do to preserve your teeth. You see, your mouth has both good and bad bacteria. Bad bacteria cause plaque to form and lead to issues like gum disease and tooth decay. Eating unhealthy foods upsets the balance between these bacteria, which creates an environment plaque is more likely to grow in.
Conversely, if you grind your teeth you could be wearing them down. In fact, when you grind you damage your enamel—the protective outer layer of your teeth—and leave your mouth more vulnerable to gum disease. Sadly, gum disease will weaken your teeth and make them more vulnerable.
Finally, please check any medications you’re taking. Some medications cause problems such as dry mouth, which can lead to long-term complications.
